The tether to the tower broke with only a soft, cotton snap. We hadn't noticed the taut wire, the line that ran from wrist to clock, from breath to inbox, tight and thin— until the moment it gave up.

The World Spun Without Us

And nothing shattered. The sky held, the bills still slept upon the counter. The world, convinced we owed it speed, spun on without our anxious hurry.

Becoming the Lifted Anchor
