The Shadow as Teacher

This poem uses the imagery of measurement and clarity to suggest that confusion (the shadow) is what gives definition to understanding (the light).

What Darkness Reveals

A solitary figure sitting on the floor in a dark, simple room. The figure is facing a window where the light is completely blocked, creating a deep shadow. The posture is one of deep contemplation or listening, emphasizing the idea that answers are found in the darkness and stillness.

🕯️ The Ground Beneath the Sun

The first lesson taught is simply this: The darkness is not the enemy’s camp, but the ground upon which we must stand to truly measure the sun.

🧭 The Hour of Spinning Needles

It has a certain, quiet wisdom, the hour when the easy answers fail, and every compass needle spins its grief, before it settles on the true north.

🌘 Naming the Shadow

We call this time confusion, loss, or strain, a gap in the calendar of bright days, but the shadow is only holding still so we might finally see the shape of what we are supposed to be.

🔕 The Strict and Unhurried Teacher

The teacher here is strict and unhurried; it asks for all the volume turned to zero, until the self becomes a perfect echo and finally, at last, learns clarity. For how would you know the shape of the light if you hadn't traced its border first?
