The Unplanned Pause: What the Darkness Taught Me Today
There are moments when the universe—or a simple shift in the power grid—decides to pull the plug on our busy schedules and force us to stop.
Today was one of those days.
Over the past few weeks, our island experienced three separate nationwide power outages. During the first two, I was right inside my workplace when the lights went out. But today, on this third occasion, I happened to be away on my lunch break.
Returning from lunch, completely unaware of what had happened while I was stepping down the road, I opened the doors and walked straight into total darkness. My colleague turned to me and said softly, "There's no current."
Standing there in the quiet stillness of an office without power, listening to the hum of machinery drop into complete silence, a question rose in my heart to God: "What is going on?"
For about half an hour, we sat together in that unexpected darkness—no screens glowing, no buzzing equipment, no urgent tasks demanding our immediate attention. Just a room full of people suddenly given permission to be quiet, to pause, and to simply be.
Before long, our boss announced that we could leave early for the day.
Finding Light in the Interruption
In our fast-paced lives, we rarely give ourselves permission to stop unless something external forces our hand. We rush from task to task, meeting to meeting, keeping our minds constantly plugged in.
Yet, as I walked out into the afternoon sunlight today, I felt a quiet sense of gratitude for the interruption.
Sometimes a blackout is just a disruption.
But sometimes, if we let it, a blackout is a invitation to slow down, look up, and breathe.
It reminded me that even when our plans are plunged into darkness, we aren't stranded. God meets us right where the current stops, reminding us that our worth isn't tied to how fast we produce, but to how deeply we rest in His peace.
A Quiet Thought for Your Day
When life unexpectedly pulls the plug on your plans today, don't rush to fix the noise. Take a deep breath and rest in the quiet pause.
